The Gallery at The Needlemakers is part of something larger than just being a physical (and soon virtual) shop – profits from The Gallery are reinvested in Indian educational projects and development by Helping Elsewhere – our charitable arm.
The Gallery is owned and run by Helen Hitchcock and Tracey Eaton, both Indiaphiles of the first order. If we’re not in the shadow of the Sussex Downs, then we’re in India! But the Lewes shop just keeps on running…
Our physical shop is situated in The Needlemakers, West Street, Lewes, East Sussex BN7 2NZ so, please, if you are in the area please pop in and see us. There’s a map on our Find Us page.
Well, Helping Elsewhere has been running since 2007 and we opened our first shop in Cobblestone Walk in 2012. Since then we’ve moved around within the grounds to bigger and better units (we’re now next to the famous, and rather good,Tea Shop), and our latest venture is a second shop in The Needlemakers in historic Lewes. An online shop will soon appear on our other Cobblestone Gallery site as well!
We sell clothing, jewellery, homewares and gifts sourced from India and around, and we aim to be as ethical as possible. That means travelling to Jaipur (such hardship!) to visit our clothing factories, knowing our jeweller and his family (definitely never a hardship!) in Goa and being introduced to marvelous organisations like the Barefoot College in Tilonia, Rajasthan (showing us what overcoming hardship really means!).
